Tribute to a Legendary Conservationist
After the passing of renowned primatologist Jane Goodall at the age of 91, actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio paid a heartfelt tribute to his friend and colleague. DiCaprio, who had the privilege of working with Goodall as a United Nations Messenger of Peace since 2014, remembered her as "a real hero for the planet, an inspiration for millions, and a dear friend."
A Lifetime of Dedication to Conservation
Goodall devoted her life to the protection of our planet and gave a voice to wild animals and the ecosystems where they live. Her groundbreaking research on chimpanzees in Tanzania revolutionized our understanding of these amazing creatures and their behavior. As DiCaprio noted, "Your groundbreaking research on chimpanzees in Tanzania changed our understanding of how our closest relatives live, establish contacts, and think – we are deeply connected not only with chimpanzees and other big monkeys, but with all life."
Inspiring Generations
DiCaprio praised Goodall’s tireless efforts to raise awareness about the importance of conservation and her ability to inspire generations with her message of hope and responsibility. "Jane has been traveling around the world with tireless energy for decades and awakened generations to the miracle of the natural world," he said. "She spoke directly to the next generation and conveyed hope, responsibility, and the belief that everyone can make a difference."
Carrying on Her Legacy
DiCaprio invited his supporters to join him in honoring Goodall’s legacy by supporting the Jane Goodall Institute and other nature conservation groups. "Now we all have to carry the flashlight for you to protect our shared house," he said. The Jane Goodall Institute announced that the primatologist passed away due to natural causes while on a speaking tour in California.
A Pioneer in Her Field
Goodall’s remarkable journey began in 1960 when she traveled to Tanzania from her native England to study wild chimpanzees. Her work spanned over 60 years, during which she emphasized the need to protect chimpanzees from extinction and redefined species preservation to include the needs of local communities and the environment. Recently, Goodall collaborated with DiCaprio on the film "Howl," a live-action movie about the survival journey of dogs and wolves told from the animals’ perspective.
Remembering a Conservation Icon
Goodall’s passing leaves a void in the conservation community, but her legacy will continue to inspire and motivate people around the world to take action in protecting our planet. As DiCaprio so eloquently put it, "We are deeply connected not only with chimpanzees and other big monkeys, but with all life." Her work will live on, and her message of hope and responsibility will continue to resonate with generations to come.
