YouTube Settlement with Donald Trump
YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5 million to settle a lawsuit with Donald Trump after his account was banned following the Capitol uprising on January 6th. The US President was suspended by Google due to his role in the uprising, where his supporters tried to prevent Joe Biden’s election victory from being ratified.
Background of the Ban
The violent scenes that occurred over four years ago left a police officer dead. According to court documents submitted on Monday, $22 million from the settlement will go towards a trust for the National Mall in Washington DC and the construction of a ballroom in the White House. The rest will be paid to other parties involved in the case, including the American Conservative Union.
Google’s Stance
Google refused to comment on the reasons for the settlement, which is not an admission of liability. Mr. Trump’s YouTube account has been online again since 2023.
Other Legal Settlements
The parent company of Google, Alphabet, is the third technology company to settle with Mr. Trump over what he regarded as an illegitimacy following the uprising. He was also suspended by the platforms of Meta and Twitter, prompting him to create his own social media platform, Truth Social. Meta agreed to pay $25 million to settle Mr. Trump’s lawsuit, and X (formerly Twitter, after being bought by Elon Musk in 2022) decided on $10 million.
Recent Developments
The president and his supporters have incorrectly claimed that the election was stolen in 2020. The Alphabet boss, Sundar Pichai, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, and Mr. Musk all attended the inauguration of Mr. Trump this year. In the first months of 2025, he headed the Trump government’s cost reduction efforts.
