Introduction to the Documentary

A new Netflix documentary aims to get to the bottom of why the Montreal Expos are no longer a part of Major League Baseball. The streamer has published the trailer for the documentary, which will debut on the platform on October 21. The film will premiere at the Du Nouveau Cinéma festival on October 9th.

Background of the Expos

The Expos were the first team in Major League Baseball to call Canada home and remain popular with many Quebecers, even though they played their last game in 2004. The team was part of the National League East Division, making their debut in 1969. After decades of highs and lows, the MLB bought the team and moved it to Washington, D.C. to become the Washington Nationals after the 2004 season.

The Documentary’s Focus

The film, directed by Jean-François Poisson, focuses on the ongoing questions and secrets surrounding the death of the Expos. Hall of Famers and former Expos players Pedro Martinez, Vladimir Guerrero Sr., and Larry Walker are interviewed, along with former manager Felipe Alou and a series of journalists, fans, and team workers.

Insights from the Trailer

In the trailer, Pedro Martinez says, "As best we are in hockey, Montreal is a baseball city." Another participant in the film notes, "The death of the Expos is like a big game of Clue. Many motives. Many suspects. We have a long list." The documentary promises to explore the various reasons behind the team’s demise.

Release Date and Relation to the World Series

The documentary will make its streaming debut three days before the World Series starts in 2024 on October 24th. This year’s MLB playoffs start on Tuesday, making the documentary’s release timely and relevant for baseball fans. With its unique blend of interviews and analysis, the documentary is sure to spark interesting discussions about the Expos and their place in baseball history.
