Introduction to Sigrid
Sigrid, a Norwegian singer-songwriter, has been making waves in the music industry since her teenage years. Despite her success and appearances on some of the world’s biggest festival stages, she considers herself an introvert. Sigrid broke into the scene at a young age and was appointed BBC Music Sound of 2018 at just 21 years old, making her the second youngest artist to receive the title after Adele.
Overcoming Shyness through Music
Sigrid recalls being very shy as a child and not feeling comfortable on stage. However, she found solace in playing the piano, which became her safe space. "Piano is more of an introverted instrument," she says. "It’s the type of instrument where you look away from the crowd, you look into the piano." Sigrid’s love for piano helped her overcome her shyness, and she began to create her own world through music.
Finding Comfort in Live Performances
Despite being an introvert, Sigrid finds comfort in live performances. She says, "What I love about live music is that I am in full control, I don’t like having a lot around me." Sigrid describes her upcoming third album as an "energetic extrovert album with introverted lyrics." Her latest single, Fort Knox, gives a taste of this energy, and she says it’s "one of my favorites I have ever done."
A Crash Course in Growing Up
Sigrid believes she had a crash course in growing up, writing her first email to a record label and dropping out of university after three weeks to pursue her music career. The year before her breakout single, Kill My Vibe, was "the best training I could have ever had." Sigrid spent five days a week writing music, traveling between London and her home in Norway.
Changing Her Creative Process
For her new album, Sigrid changed her creative process to reduce pressure. She wrote much of the material in parks and coffee shops instead of in a studio. Sigrid believes this new approach really shows in the music on her new record. "Sometimes a song has to marinate for a year, six months, it can take some time," she says. "I’ve never had so much fun making an album."
Embracing Her Introverted Nature
Sigrid’s journey has taught her to embrace her introverted nature and find comfort in her music. She says, "I was really not made for it in many ways, but I fell in love with the piano." Sigrid’s story is a testament to the power of music in overcoming shyness and finding one’s true self. With her new album on the way, fans can expect more energetic and extroverted music with introverted lyrics, showcasing Sigrid’s unique personality and talent.
