Introduction to a New Film Project

Astra and Avalon are teaming up with Finland’s Tack Films to produce a new film inspired by the Sundance Short Film winner, àlex Lora’s, work. Lora, a rising star in the Spanish film industry, won the Sundance Short Film Grand Jury Prize for "The Masterpiece" in 2024.

The Film’s Concept

The new film, "Blue Smurf Ice Cream", written by Laia Soler, is a heartwarming family drama that explores the relationships between adult siblings as they navigate their aging parents’ needs. The story delves into the consequences of the "Brain Drain" triggered by the 2008 financial crisis.

The Filmmaker’s Background

àlex Lora has extensive experience in documentary filmmaking, with credits including "Your Father’s Chair" and editor roles in other films. "Blue Smurf Ice Cream" will be his second solo fictional feature film, following "Unicorn". The project has received support from the Spanish ICAA film institute and development support from the ICEC of Catalonia, with regional broadcasters on board.

Production Team

Astra and Avalon have previously co-produced "The Good Daughter", the second feature film by Julia de Paz, a rising star in the Spanish film industry. Avalon has also produced notable films such as Carla Simón’s Berlinale Golden Bear winner "Alcarràs", Paula Ortiz’s "The Red Virgin", and Elena Martín’s "Creature", which won the Europa Cinemas label at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
