Introduction to ROW K Entertainment’s Latest Acquisition
ROW K Entertainment has made its third acquisition since the start of August, securing the rights to the action remake of Cliffhanger starring Pierce Brosnan and Lily James. This deal was made in a highly competitive situation.
Background on ROW K Entertainment
The transaction marks the third acquisition for ROW K, which has had a productive Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) with support from Media Capital Technologies and under the direction of President Megan Colligan. Prior to this, ROW K acquired Dead Man’s Gate and Charlie Harper.
Details on the Film
ROW K is planning a wide release for the film in 2026 on 3,000 screens. The new interpretation of the 1993 thriller, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, is currently in post-production and is based on a script by Ana Lily Amirpour, Sasha Penn, Mark Bianculli, and Melanie. The story follows an experienced mountaineer and his daughter, who run a luxury chalet in the Dolomites. When a weekend trip with the son of a billionaire is targeted by kidnappers, the daughter must confront her fears and save her family.
Production Team
The producers of the film include Lars Sylvest of Thank You Pictures, Joe Neurauter from Supernix, Thorsten Schumacher by Rocket Science, and Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe. ROW K negotiated the deal with CAA Media Finance, while Rocket Science represented international rights.
Statement from President Megan Colligan
According to Colligan, "The original Cliffhanger was celebrated for its mountain cinema photography, and this remake fulfills this legacy with a comprehensive scenery all over Europe – the result is a breathtaking production that was built for the theater."
Original Film’s Success
The original Cliffhanger film, not involving Sylvester Stallone in the reboot, earned $84 million in 1993, which is equivalent to approximately $188 million today. The global gross of $255 million corresponds to $572 million when adjusted for inflation.
