Introduction to the New Head of the World Cinema Fund

The Berlinale has appointed SATA Cissokho as the new head of the World Cinema Fund (WCF) and the toolbox program. Cissokho comes from Paradise City Sales in Paris, where she was responsible for selecting projects and promoting emerging filmmakers.

Background and Experience

Cissokho has a wealth of experience in the film industry, having worked with numerous film commissions, selection committees, and juries. She has been involved with organizations such as the French CNC Aux Cinémas du Monde, the Atlas workshops of the Marrakech Film Festival, Rotterdams Cinemart, and the new Dawn Fund. Additionally, she has been a mentor, workshop manager, and industry expert for initiatives like the Cannes producer network, Torinofilmlab, Eauve, and Creative Producer Indaba.

Role and Responsibilities

In her new role, Cissokho will oversee the World Cinema Fund and the ToolBox program of the European Film Market (EFM) of the Berlinale. Both initiatives support underrepresented artistic voices in the film industry. Cissokho will focus on the toolbox program initially and transition to the WCF tour in autumn. The current WCF boss, Vincenzo Bugno, ended his term after 21 years in the role.

The World Cinema Fund and ToolBox Program

The World Cinema Fund will continue to finance projects from regions with fragile film infrastructures. The ToolBox program will provide professional training, mentoring, and practical instruments for underrepresented film experts. Both initiatives are financed by the Creative Europe Media Strand. The WCF has financed 370 projects through various programs, including films like Asghar Farahdi’s "A Separation" and this year’s UN determined respect winner "The Mysterious View of the Flamingo" by Diego Céspedes.

Support for Underrepresented Filmmakers

ToolBox was founded in 2022 and has supported producers from countries that are underrepresented in the international film industry. The ToolBox alumni include Leah Baker, producer of this year’s Caméra d’Or winner "The President’s Cake". The program aims to promote diversity and inclusivity in the film industry.

Reaction to the Appointment

Tanja Meissner, director of Berlinale Pro, said: "SATA Cissokho’s unprecedented experience and commitment make her the ideal person to lead the next chapter of the WCF and the toolbox program." Cissokho expressed her excitement and honor at taking on the leadership role, stating that the World Cinema Fund has been a leading force for diversity in the global cinema landscape, defending urgent films with strong artistic, political, and cultural effects.
