Recent Developments in TikTok Deal

Donald Trump has announced that media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his son Lachlan could be part of an agreement where TikTok will be under American control in the United States. The US President also named Michael Dell, the founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, as possible participants in the deal.

Potential Participants

"I think they will be in the group. A few others. Really great people, very prominent people," said Trump. "And they are also American patriots, you know, they love this country. I think they will do a really good job." Mr. Trump said that Larry Ellison, founder and CEO of the software company Oracle, was part of the same group. His participation in the potential TikTok deal had previously been unveiled.

Deal Details

The Press spokesman for the White House, Karoline Leavitt, said on Saturday that Oracle would be responsible for the data and safety of the app. The Americans will check six of the seven seats for a planned TikTok board. After said Mr. Trump, this comes to him and China’s XI Jinping held a "very productive call" on Friday. The final approval for the TikTok deal, of which a large part is still unknown.

Security Concerns

Once confirmed, the deal stops TikTok from being banned in the United States after the legislature has been decided that it is a security risk for the data of the citizens. Officials warned that the algorithm TikTok is susceptible to manipulation by Chinese authorities, which they can use to accelerate specific content on the social media platform in a way that is difficult to recognize.

Current Status

The Congress had ordered the app for American users until January 2025 if its Chinese owner ByteDance did not sell their assets in the country – but the ban was late by President Trump. Mr. Trump said on Sunday that he "biased a little" in terms of TikTok after he told reporters on Friday: "I was not a fan of TikTok and then I had to use it and then I became a fan and it helped me to win a choice in a landslide."

Latest Updates

After calling with Mr. XI, Mr. Trump said in a social post: "In many very important questions, including trade, fentanyl, we have made the need to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, and the approval of the TikTok deal." Mr. Trump later told the reporters in the White House that XI had approved the deal, but said that he still had to be signed. Representatives of Murdochs, Mr. Dell and Mr. Ellison, have not yet commented on a potential TikTok deal.
