Sinclair Takes a Stand Against Jimmy Kimmel
The media conglomerate Sinclair has announced that it will be replacing "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in its Friday time slot with a Charlie Kirk Tribute Special on its ABC-affiliate stations. This decision comes after Kimmel made comments about Kirk on his late-night show, which Sinclair deemed "inappropriate and deeply insensitive." The company will also be offering the special to all other ABC stations across the country.
Background on the Controversy
Sinclair, one of the largest TV channel operators in the United States, has a reputation for having a politically conservative tendency. The company’s announcement came after it and another large ABC partner, Nexstar Media Group, pulled "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" from their ABC stations in response to Kimmel’s comments. Shortly after, ABC put production on the show on hold indefinitely.
Demands for Apology and Donation
In addition to replacing Kimmel’s show, Sinclair is demanding that he apologize to Kirk’s family and make a "sensible personal donation" to them and the Turning Point USA organization. The company believes that Kimmel’s comments were not only insensitive but also unprofessional.
Statement from Sinclair
Jason Smith, deputy chairman of Sinclair, stated, "In a critical moment for our country, Mr. Kimmel’s statements were inappropriate and deeply insensitive. We believe that broadcasting organizers are responsible for raising and increasing respectful, constructive dialogue in our communities." Smith also appreciated the chairman of the FCC for taking notice of the incident and emphasized the need for regulatory measures to control local radio operators.
Suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Sinclair has sworn not to lift the suspension of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on its stations until formal discussions with ABC are held on the network’s commitment to professionalism and accountability. Even if ABC resumes production on the show, Sinclair does not intend to air it until it is confident that appropriate steps have been taken to maintain the standards expected of a national broadcast platform.
Future Plans for Sinclair
Last month, Sinclair terminated a comprehensive strategic review of its broadcasting business, including potential sales and acquisitions. Any deal involving Sinclair that would include the transmission of broadcast functions would be subject to FCC review and approval.
