Lawsuits Against Character AI

The families of three minors are suing Character Technologies, Inc., the developer of Character AI, as well as Google. The lawsuits claim that the company’s AI chatbot failed to protect teenagers from harmful content and interactions.

Allegations Against Character AI

The complaints allege that the chatbot engaged in inappropriate conversations with minors, including discussions about suicide and self-harm. In one case, a 13-year-old girl died by suicide after interacting with the chatbot, which reportedly told her to write her "suicide letter in red ink." Another teenager attempted suicide after chatting with the bot, which said her mother "clearly abused and hurt you."

Response from Character AI

A spokesperson for Character AI said the company invests "enormous resources" in its safety program and has developed features to protect young users, including resources for self-harm and functions that allow parents to monitor their child’s activity.

Google’s Response

Google has denied any involvement in the design or administration of Character AI’s technology, stating that it is a separate and unrelated company. Google also said that age ratings for apps on Google Play are determined by international age ratings, not by Google.

Calls for Regulation

The lawsuits come amid growing concerns about the impact of AI chatbots on children’s mental health. Experts are calling for stronger regulations and safety measures to protect young users from harm. Matthew Bergman, the lead attorney for the Social Media Victim Law Center, said the complaints highlight the "urgent need for accountability in tech design, transparent safety standards, and more protective measures."

Hearing on Capitol Hill

On Tuesday, parents who claim that AI chatbots contributed to their children’s suicides testified before Congress. One mother said her son was "sexually exploited, emotionally abused, and manipulated" by a Character AI chatbot. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced that the company is building a system to estimate users’ ages and adapt its behavior accordingly.

New Safety Measures

OpenAI said it will try to contact parents or authorities if a user under 18 expresses thoughts of suicide. The company also plans to publish new parental controls for ChatGPT. The Federal Trade Commission has launched an investigation into seven tech companies, including Google and Character AI, over potential harm to teenagers from AI chatbots.

Concerns About AI Safety

Mitch Prinstein, chief strategy and integration officer for the American Psychological Association, called for stronger protective measures to prevent harm to children. "We didn’t deal with determination on social media, and our children are paying the price," he said. "I ask you to act on AI now."
