The Return of the Owens Sisters
The Owens sisters will soon be back on the big screen. Nicole Kidman announced on Saturday via Instagram that the production of Practical Magic 2 has been completed. She shared a video of herself and Sandra Bullock walking into the sunset on set.
A Wrap on Filming
"This is a wrap on Practical Magic 2," Kidman wrote as a caption. "Huge thanks to the cast and crew for all their magic." In July, Kidman shared a post to celebrate the first day of shooting, which showed another video of her and Bullock hugging, with the caption: "The witches are back. Owens Sisters’ First day on set!"
The Original Film
The original film, released in 1998, starred Kidman and Bullock as orphaned sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, who were raised by their witch aunts Aunt Jet (Dianne Wiest) and Aunt Franny (Stockard Channing). They learned how to use their powers to overcome a curse that prevented them from finding love. Wiest and Stockard will also return for the sequel, which was announced in July.
The Sequel
"25 years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet, and Aunt Franny flew from the pages of Alice Hoffman’s beloved novel to cinemas around the world, and we are thrilled to bring the Owens family back to the big screen," said the filmmakers. The permanent affection for these characters was our inspiration to deliver the next episode in the history of Owens to both new fans and those who have been with us since the beginning.
New Additions to the Cast
Further additions to the lineup include Joey King (The Act), Lee Pace (Body Body Body), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Xolo Mariduena (Cobra Kai), and Solly McLeod (The Dead Don’t Hurt).
A Notable Absence
However, Evan Rachel Wood, who played Sally’s (Bullock) daughter Kylie in the original film, will not be returning for the sequel. Wood wrote in her Instagram stories in July: "I was not asked to come back for the Practical Magic sequel. I offered my services, even if it was just a scene or a line. I was told they are moving on. I’m sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily returned to my sisters."
Production and Release
Susanne Bier (The Perfect Couple, Bird Box) directs the feature, and Akiva Goldsman (co-writer of the original Practical Magic) and Georgia Pritchett (Succession) wrote the script. Warner Bros.’ Practical Magic 2 will hit theaters on September 18, 2026.
