Raising Awareness of Fast Fashion

Models have taken to the catwalk in an event aimed at making people think twice about the environmental impact of fast fashion. The event, held in Slough’s Town Square, was organized by the Slough Business Improvement District and the Slough Anti-Litter Society.

The Event’s Purpose

The goal of the event was to raise awareness of the environmental influences of the garment industry. Designers were challenged to transform old clothes or materials into outfits with the principle of "creativity that hits sustainability" in mind. This meant creating new and stylish pieces from items that would otherwise be thrown away.

The Impact of Fast Fashion

Fast fashion refers to the quick sales of fashion trends and the move towards cheaper, mass-produced clothing. However, this comes with a significant environmental cost. As Tirza Mira, chairman of the company, explained, "More people understand that if they throw something into the trash can, something is simply gone." But the reality is that it doesn’t just disappear – it ends up in landfills, oceans, or poor countries.

Sustainable Fashion in Action

At the event, visitors were able to exchange old clothes for tokens, which could be used to purchase unwanted clothing. This approach encourages people to think creatively about fashion and reduces waste. One customer, Chloe, attended the event hoping to find something to wear to an Asian wedding. She commented, "There’s nothing in charities, so this is a perfect place."

Upcycling on the Catwalk

The event featured a catwalk where unique designs made from upcycled materials were showcased. Designer Quesia Rahim created a stunning dress from ties, which she had collected from the men in her life over the past year. This approach to fashion is not only sustainable but also promotes creativity and individuality.

Making a Difference

This is the third year that the upcycling event has taken place in Slough, and it continues to inspire people to think differently about fashion. By raising awareness of the environmental impact of fast fashion and promoting sustainable fashion practices, events like this can make a real difference. As people become more conscious of the effects of their purchasing decisions, they can start to make changes that benefit the planet.
