Ricky Martin’s Energetic Performance at the 2025 VMAs
Ricky Martin gave an energetic performance before taking the Latin Icon Award on the 2025 Video Music Awards, which took place in New York on Sunday evening. The singer played and accepted the first honor that recognized his contributions to launching Latin music and culture in the mainstream for four decades. Throughout his career, Martin has sold more than 70 million albums worldwide and received numerous awards for his music, acting, and humanitarian work.
A Career Spanning Four Decades
Martin’s performance began with his massive hit "Livin’ La Vida Loca" before starting a medley of songs. He brought the energy when he appeared in the audience and on stage. J Balvin entered the stage to present Martin before his performance, which had a Latin American taste. Balvin praised Martin, saying, "Ricky Martin not only set up the stage for the Latin takeover; he had to build it from scratch at a time when Latin music was almost never played on mainstream radio." He added that Martin broke barriers with massive hits and an unmistakable sound, inspiring him and many other Latino performers.
Receiving the Latin Icon Award
Martin was awarded the Latin Icon Award by Jessica Simpson, who recalled opening for the singer on his Livin’ La Vida Loca Tour in 1999/2000 when she was starting her music career. Simpson described Martin as her inspiration, one of her idols, and still one of the most dynamic performers she knows. In his speech, Martin thanked the audience for their applause and joked that he was "addicted" to their energy, which is why he keeps coming back.
A 40-Year Career in Music
Martin reflected on his 40-year career in music, saying, "I started when I was a baby, and we’re still here." He expressed his desire to bring countries together, break boundaries, and keep music alive. He dedicated the award to his four children, showing his appreciation for their support throughout his career.
A Night to Remember
The 2025 VMAs were broadcast on Sunday at 5 p.m. in Elmont, New York, with LL Cool J serving as the host. The show was first broadcast on CBS in addition to its long-term home on MTV and live on Paramount+ for subscribers to the Premium Plan. Martin’s appearance was an anniversary of his first VMAS performance in 1999, when he was the first male Latin artist to make history by winning the award for best POP video and becoming the top winner of the night with five awards. The night was filled with memorable moments, and Martin’s performance was definitely one of the highlights.
