Introduction to a Controversial Documentary

A documentary about the mission of a retired Israeli general to save his family during the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, has become a continuing controversy for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The documentary, directed by Barry Avrich, is set to receive a US public publication.

Premiere and Protests

The feature was premiered in Toronto on Wednesday evening, where it was met with protests before the demonstration by the Roy Thomson Hall. Despite the controversy, the film is moving forward with its release. Forston Consulting is distributing the film in the USA, and Cineplex Pictures will be releasing it in Canada.

Release Details

The North American release on October 3 will feature over 125 prints in the top 20 markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, San Francisco, Chicago, Vancouver, Montreal, and West Palm Beach. The release is supported by the social-issue organization The Impact Series.

Controversy Surrounding the Documentary

The documentary was originally withdrawn from TIFF, supposedly due to concerns about the rights releases that affect the film material from Hamas’ body cameras. However, this is not entirely accurate. Avrich stated during a conversation on stage in TIFF last week that Hamas, as far as he knew, had no licensing department when he made the film.

Internal Opposition within TIFF

What emerged from talks with sources in Toronto is that the film triggered internal opposition within TIFF because of its admission to the festival in view of the continuing war in Gaza. The film’s topic, a former general of the Israel Defense Forces, was a point of contention. After a lot of back and forth between TIFF and Avrich, the film was eventually stopped before the festival. The filmmaker said on stage last week that Cameron Bailey, CEO of Festival CEO, told him that it was a "mistake" to withdraw the film.
