Introduction to the Music Photography Awards

Abbey Road Studios has announced the nominees for their music photography awards after considering more than 20,000 submissions from 30 different countries. The photos feature stars such as Chappell Roan, Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX, Tyler, the Creator, Pulp, the 1975, Maggie Rogers, Fontaines DC, Doja Cat, Central Cee, and Burna Boy.

Voting and Award Ceremony

Fans can vote on the MPA website for the music moment of the year by September 23, and the award ceremony will take place on October 2 in the London Abbey Road. Mark Robertson, Marketing and Creative Director of Abbey Road, thanked the "incredibly talented community of photographers who continue to impress with their work". He added that the pictures "prove that music photography is a real art that is celebrated and plays an important role in the design of culture".

New Categories and Exhibitions

The awards include two new categories this year – portrait and festivals – with an additional guest category called Club Culture. All 40 pictures from the eight open categories will be exhibited in Outnet’s Now Pop One event location in London, where photos of the nominees can be seen between September 19 and 23.

Nominees and Their Work

Some of the nominees include:

  • Greg Black, who captured US rapper and singer Doja Cat on stage with her dancers in striking furry costumes, in the Live music category.
  • Pupat Chenaksara, who photographed British singer-songwriter Charli XCX soaked in the rain while singing on stage, in the Music moment of the year category.
  • Connor Baker, who took a picture of the Glitter box at Hï Ibiza, with a clubber in the middle of the smoke effect, in the Club culture category.
  • Jez Pennington, who captured British Rock Band Enter Shikari at the download festival with a muddy experience, in the Festivals category.
  • Phoebe Fox, who photographed British Rock Band the Cure’s lead singer Robert Smith shot in profile with his trademark and his make-up, in the Judge election category.
  • Kirby Gladstein, who took a picture of US singer-songwriter Lana Del Ray wearing a black bridal ensemble, in the Music moment of the year category.
  • Plato, who captured the crucial right hand of the US musician, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer Nile Rodgers, who is also a co-founder of the disco band Chic, in the Judge election category.
  • Annie Noelker, who photographed US record producer and songwriter Benny Blanco receiving his five-day day in a restaurant, in the Portrait category.
  • Lantz Martin, who took a picture of US rapper and record producer Ken Carson posing in profile for a black and white shot, in the Emerging photographer of the year category.
