Remembering a Rock Legend
The music world recently came together to pay tribute to the one and only Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away on July 22nd at the age of 76. Following a mega-all-star homage to the iconic rocker in England in July, the VMAs decided to honor his legacy with a special tribute. The event featured a unique pairing of Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and British young gun Yungblud, who took to the stage to celebrate Ozzy’s enduring impact on the music industry.
A Heartfelt Tribute
The tribute began with a heartfelt video message from Ozzy’s son Jack, who was surrounded by four of Ozzy’s grandchildren. They shouted out their dad’s famous phrase, "We’re going to be crazy!" – a nod to Ozzy’s unbridled energy and passion for music. Yungblud then took the stage, channeling Ozzy’s spirit with impressive strength, particularly on the opening song "Crazy Train." The performance was a testament to Ozzy’s influence on a new generation of musicians.
A Musical Celebration
The band seamlessly transitioned into the only Black Sabbath song performed during the tribute, the 1972 ballad "Changes." The song naturally flowed into the inevitable "Mama, I’m Coming Home," which featured an outstanding performance by the 77-year-old Tyler, accompanied by Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. Yungblud joined the duo on stage for the final chorus, while Perry delivered a scorching solo. The musical celebration was a fitting tribute to Ozzy’s enduring legacy.
Ozzy’s Lasting Impact
Ozzy’s passing was met with an outpouring of tributes from the music world. Aerosmith released a statement, saying that Ozzy’s death had left them with "broken hearts." They remembered him as "Our Brother in Rock, Ozzy Osbourne. A voice that has changed music forever." Yungblud also shared a personal anecdote about the mentorship he received from Ozzy, posting photos of the moment when Ozzy presented him with a custom-made cross chain.
A Star-Studded Event
The 2025 MTV VMAs, hosted by LL Cool J, featured a stacked performance lineup, including Sabrina Carpenter, Sombr, Alex Warren, J. Balvin with DJ Snake, Post Malone, Doja Cat, Jelly Roll, Conan Gray, and Tate McRae. The event was a celebration of music’s power to bring people together and transcend generations. As the music world continues to mourn the loss of Ozzy Osbourne, his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the music that will continue to inspire future generations.
