The weekend saw a significant increase in box office numbers, with several new releases and expansions performing well.
New Releases and Expansions
Rachael Abigail Holder’s film saw an outstanding increase in its second weekend, with an estimated gross of $120,000 in an expansion to 110 cinemas, bringing its total to approximately $180,000. The film, which stars André Holland, Nicole Beharie, Dewanda Wise, and Roy Wood Jr., was initially opened exclusively in the Angelika Film Center in New York, where it grossed $55,000 over the four-day holiday weekend.
Faith-Based Animation
In the broad release, the animated film "Light of the World" estimated $2.4 million at the weekend on 2,075 screens, placing it at number 9 at the domestic box office. The 2D animation film tells the story of the life of Jesus through the eyes of a young apostle, John.
Other Notable Releases
Neon’s "Splitsville" grossed $815,000 on 800 screens for a total of $1.23 million in its third week. "The Threesome" took in $592,000 on 402 screens. Roadside Attractions’ "Twoless" opened to a 3-day gross of $504,000 on 567 screens.
Independent Films
GKIDS released "The Legend of Hei 2" on 348 screens to $226,000. The follow-up to 2019’s "The Legend of Hei" and the long-running web series "Luo Xiaohai’s Legend" has grossed over $70 million in China since its opening in July. Focus Features’ "Honey, Not!" added $100,000 in its third week for a total of $5.7 million.
Documentaries and Limited Releases
The documentary "The American Southwest" from Ben Masters opened on 72 screens in seven states in the southwest to $73,000. "The Baltimorons" from IFC Films estimated an opening weekend of $40,000 on four screens. Music Box Films’ "A Small Prayer" took in $28,000 on 28 screens for a total of $145,000 in its third week. Cinema Lorber’s documentary "Different Steel" grossed $20,800 in two theaters.
