A Legendary Lightsaber Sells for Millions
A lightsaber used by Darth Vader in the original Star Wars films has been sold at an auction for $3.6 million (GBP £2.7 million). This iconic prop, which was featured in films such as The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, was the highlight of the first day of the auction in Los Angeles on Thursday.
A Piece of Cinematic History
According to Propstore, the auctioneers based in Buckinghamshire, this memorabilia is the most expensive Star Wars item ever sold at an auction. Brandon Alinger, Chief Operating Officer of Propstore, stated, "A Star Wars lightsaber – the symbol of one of the greatest legends in cinema – is the ultimate piece of the franchise to be sold at auction." The lightsaber was used extensively during filming at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire and is described by Alinger as one of the most recognizable props in film history.
Other Iconic Props Sold at Auction
The auction, which took place in California, featured many props from British productions. One notable item was a bullwhip, belt, and holster used by Harrison Ford in the 1989 film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which sold for $485,100 (£360,000). Another item was a Platform 9 3/4 sign from the original Harry Potter films, which was estimated to sell for between $20,000 (£14,925) and $40,000 (£29,850).
A New Era for Film Collecting
The sale of the lightsaber marks a significant moment in the world of film collecting. Alinger said, "The result marks a landmark moment, not only for Propstore, but for the entire world of film collecting. It speaks to the enduring cultural power of Star Wars and the passion of fans and collectors who see these artifacts as touchstones of modern mythology." The auction demonstrates the value and significance of film memorabilia, highlighting the lasting impact of iconic movies on popular culture.
