Frustrating Customer Behaviors
A little common courtesy is sufficient when dining out, but some customers seem to lack this basic etiquette. There are certain behaviors that can annoy waiters and make their job more difficult.
The "ICKs" of Dining Out
A frustrated server shared her experiences on Tiktok, highlighting three behaviors that she finds particularly annoying. She started by saying, "These are the ICKs that I get as a server from customers. I’ll give you three."
Interrupting the Server
The first behavior she mentioned is when customers interrupt her before she can even introduce herself. She explained, "No. 1 is when I go to a table and I’m like ‘Hello, my name is …’ and before I could even get my name out, they just start ordering." She finds this behavior rude and wishes that customers would be more patient and allow her to finish speaking.
Asking About Free Refills
The second behavior she mentioned is related to free refills. She said, "No. 2 is when someone asks me if they get free refills on Strawberry lemonade. I already know that I will get 45 of these requests, and it will be a tip of $2 or zero." She finds it frustrating when customers ask about free refills, and she often tells them that the restaurant no longer has the drink they requested.
Jealous Partners
The third behavior she mentioned is when a customer’s partner becomes jealous of her. She explained, "My third ICK is when I’m waiting on a couple and the girlfriend thinks that I’m trying to steal her man." She tries to make the partner feel comfortable by giving her attention and ignoring the husband, but this behavior often results in a low tip.
The Consequences of Bad Behavior
While the server was sharing her frustrations online, another restaurant worker was fired for confronting a customer about a low tip. The customer had left a $7 tip and claimed that it was an accident, but the server did not believe them. The customer complained to the manager, and the server was released from her job. These incidents highlight the importance of treating servers with respect and courtesy, as their job can be challenging and frustrating at times.
