Introduction to Music Therapy
Patients at a mental health unit in Devon have been involved in a unique therapy project, creating an album of ambient music. The project, which took place at Langdon Hospital in Dawlish, brought together a group of six patients who worked together to record and edit an album titled Labyrinth of the Esprit: The Cosmic Hunt.
The Creative Process
The patients used a variety of sounds from across Devon, including the bells of Buckfast Abbey, beehive noises, and atmospheric sounds from the old stone circles of Fernworthy Reservoir. These natural sounds were combined with synthesized and traditional musical instruments to produce the songs on the album. The result is a unique blend of music that reflects the beauty and diversity of the Devon landscape.
The Therapeutic Benefits of Music
According to Matt Smith, the musical technical trainer at the Devon Partnership NHS Trust, the project has helped the patients to get in touch with nature and tap into their creative potential. Smith noted that the songs on the album are based on old mythology and have a "rural story" that runs throughout. He also emphasized the importance of spending time outdoors and appreciating the natural world, saying "it’s not what you discover, but taking the time to just sit and be outside."
Patient Experiences
One of the patients involved in the project, who wished to remain anonymous and went by the name Seb, found the experience to be therapeutically beneficial. Seb said that the process of creating music "brought the senses into the mind" and helped him to relax and express himself creatively. He hopes that the album will show people that those in safe units are capable of producing high-quality music and contributing to society.
The Power of Creative Expression
The project highlights the importance of creative expression and therapy in mental health treatment. By providing patients with the opportunity to engage in music and other creative activities, healthcare providers can help them to develop new skills, build confidence, and improve their overall well-being. The album, Labyrinth of the Esprit: The Cosmic Hunt, is a testament to the power of creative expression and the potential for music to bring people together and promote healing.
