Summer Box Office Recap

The summer box office has come to a close, with the total earnings estimated to be $3.76 billion, approximately 0.2% or $7 million behind 2024. This summer’s top films included Lilo & Stitch at $422m, Superhuman at $348m, Law World Rebirth at $336 million, How to Train Your Kite at $263 million, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps at $260 million.

Late Summer Outbreak

Zach Cregger’s horror film about missing schoolchildren has earned $134.6 million in North America and over $230 million worldwide. The film was a late summer star of a season that some thought would be driven by Barbie and Oppenheimer in the summer of 2023. However, this year’s summer box office told a different story.

New Releases

Universal’s new version of Jaw opened in second place with an impressive $8.1 million from 3,200 locations, rising to $9.8 million over four days. The film’s cumulative North American box office now stands at $283.6 million. Darren Aronofsky’s R-rated crime caper Caught Steal opened in third place behind the re-release of the 50-year-old film, with a three-day start of $7.8 million and $9.5 million over four days.

Other Notable Releases

Disney’s More Triggers Friday added $6.5 million from 3,475 locations, bringing its total to $80.5 million after four sessions. The Roses, a dark comedy remake from Searchlight Pictures, opened in fifth place with an estimated $6.4 million from 2,700 locations, rising to $8 million over four days. Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps crossed the global threshold of $500 million, with North America playing a significant role in this achievement.

Limited Releases

Mubi’s Sundance psychological thriller Lurker earned $135,749 from 19 cinemas over four days, calming down after two weekends for $215,452. Focus Features reported a second week of $920,000 for Treasure Not in 1,332 locations, rising to $1.4 million over the four-day Labor Day holiday weekend. David Mackenzie’s thriller Relay added $328,906 from three days and $417,489 over four days, reaching $2.9 million.

Box Office Performance

The summer box office performance was affected by various factors, including the release of new films and the re-release of classic movies. The total earnings for the summer were lower than expected, with some films performing better than others. The North American box office has raised a lead of 25% over 2024 and has dropped to $5.98 billion by September 1st.

Top Films of the Summer

The top films of the summer included Lilo & Stitch, Superhuman, Law World Rebirth, How to Train Your Kite, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. These films performed well at the box office, with some exceeding expectations. The original film of the summer was Apple’s F1, published by Warner Bros, which earned $187 million.
