Introduction to the Case
A man from Los Angeles, Raymond Boodarian, has been charged with murder and burglary. He is accused of killing Robin Kaye, a music director for American Idol, and her husband Thomas Deluca. The case took a turn when Boodarian’s mental health was called into question, and his case was transferred to a local court for mental health.
The Incident
Boodarian was arrested in mid-July after Kaye and Deluca were found shot on their Encino property. The police had carried out a welfare check on the couple’s home after receiving calls about a possible robbery. When the police arrived, they found Boodarian on the property, and a confrontation ensued, resulting in the deaths of Kaye and Deluca.
The Investigation
The investigation revealed that Boodarian had climbed over the 8-foot spike fence surrounding the couple’s property and entered their home through an unlocked door. The house showed no signs of forced entry, and the authorities believe that Boodarian was already inside the house when Kaye and Deluca returned home. A confrontation ensued, resulting in the deaths of the couple.
Boodarian’s Mental Health
Boodarian’s public defender told the court that he has "serious problems with mental health." During his appearance in court, Boodarian wore a "suicide dress" to prevent self-harm and did not respond to the judge’s questions. The judge suspended his indictment and transferred his case to a local court for mental health.
The Court Hearing
At the hearing, Judge Martin L. Herscovitz repeatedly tried to get Boodarian’s attention, but he did not respond. "Again. Mr. Boodarian? Mr. Boodarian, can you hear me?" the judge asked. The court recording reflected that Boodarian was "still staring at space and does not respond to the questions of the court."
The Victims
Robin Kaye was a well-known music director, and her death has been met with an outpouring of love and support from the American Idol team. She had worked on several other projects, including Lip Sync Battle and Q’viva! The Chosen. Kaye had started her own company, Syncronicity, in 2000 and represented artists such as Andrea Bocelli and Kenny Loggins.
Next Steps
Boodarian’s case will be heard in a mental health court on September 3. If he is deemed competent to stand trial, his murder case will proceed. Boodarian’s father has reported that he is on trial to support him, and he was sent back without bail. The community is still reeling from the shock of Kaye and Deluca’s deaths, and the case is ongoing.
