A Refreshing Take on Relationships

The film takes a unique approach to portraying relationships, starting with the romance between Theo and Ivy. As their careers take off in different directions, the dynamics of their relationship change. Theo’s career falls, while Ivy’s restaurant empire rises, and we watch as the love between them slowly fades away.

A Role Reversal

In contrast to the beginning of their relationship, the end does not happen overnight. Theo, once the supportive partner, becomes increasingly annoying, while Ivy builds her restaurant empire, leaving little time for her family. The film comes close to portraying Ivy as a woman who is too ambitious, neglecting her husband and children for her job. However, it never loses sight of the importance of her career to both Theo and Ivy.

Memorable Performances

The appearances of Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch make the dialogue much funnier than it would be in print. Their chemistry on screen brings the characters to life, making their interactions enjoyable to watch. The supporting roles, however, are not as strong. Andy Samberg plays Theo’s loyal best friend Barry, but his character feels more like a prop to Theo’s story than a fully fleshed-out person.

Weak Supporting Roles

The friends of the main characters, played by Kate McKinnon, Jamie Demetriou, and Zoë Chao, feel like caricatures rather than real people. Their roles are underdeveloped, and they seem to be in the film only to serve a specific purpose, such as highlighting cultural differences. The dinner party scene, where they all come together, feels forced and awkward, with the characters exchanging insults and engaging in name-calling.

A Clever Mix of Humor

Despite the weak supporting roles, the film is a clever, wild, and entertaining mix of droll British humor and shiny Hollywood film. The main characters, Theo and Ivy, are well-developed and complex, making their relationship feel real and relatable. The film’s portrayal of the ups and downs of relationships is honest and refreshing, making it a worthwhile watch.

A Worthwhile Watch

With its unique take on relationships and memorable performances, the film is a great choice for anyone looking for a romantic comedy with a twist. The film’s ability to balance humor and heart makes it a compelling watch, and the chemistry between the lead actors is undeniable. Overall, the film is a great choice for anyone looking for a fun and entertaining movie that also has something to say about relationships and love.
