New Movie Releases in the UK and Ireland
This weekend, several new movies are hitting cinemas in Great Britain and Ireland. One of the most highly anticipated releases is Mike Flanagan’s latest Stephen King adaptation, Chuck’s Life, which is opening in 622 venues. The film features an all-star cast, including Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, and Mark Hamill.
About the Director
Mike Flanagan is best known for his work on Netflix mini-series The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor. His 2019 film, Doctor Sleep, opened to a total of £1.1 million GBP. Chuck’s Life is a life-affirming story that is divided into three genre-bending chapters and has already won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival in 2024.
Other New Releases
Another highly anticipated release is Ari Aster’s Covid-set Western, Eddington, which is opening in 422 locations via Universal. The film features a star-studded cast, including Pedro Pascal, Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler. Aster’s previous films, Beau is Afraid and Hereditary, have been successful at the box office, with Hereditary debuting to £1.9 million GBP in 2018.
Classic Films and Re-Releases
In addition to new releases, several classic films are being re-released in UK and Ireland cinemas. Disney is celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show with a re-release in 515 locations. Sony is also re-releasing the 1984 mockumentary This is Spinal Tap ahead of its sequel next month. The BFI Distribution is re-releasing the 1925 war drama Battleship Potemkin in 38 locations.
Event Releases and Independent Films
Universal is screening Six the Musical in 470 cinemas, while Trafalgar Releasing has the concert film Yungblud: Are You Ready, Boy? in 185 locations on Sunday. Trinity Cineasia is releasing the Chinese drama Dongji Rescue in 66 venues, which tells the story of the Lisbon Maru sinking in 1942. Picturehouse Entertainment is opening the directorial debut of Eva Victor, Sorry, Baby, in 65 locations, which won the script prize at Sundance in January.
More Independent Releases
Other independent releases include Oslo Stories Trilogy: Sex in 18 locations, which examines intimacy through three different character studies. The Ceremony is being released in 10 locations, which follows two hiking workers who work at a car wash in Bradford. The Regular Guests is being released in three cinemas, which is a comedy that follows a day in the life of unfortunate employees. Further releases include Netflix’s Thursday Murder Club, Underground Slate’s A Street to a Village, Kazoo Films’ Grand Prix of Europe, and Dogwoof’s Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Go.
