Introduction to New Dictionary Entries

The words "Skibidi", "Delulu" and "Tradwife" are among the latest additions to the Cambridge Dictionary, with over 6,000 new words and phrases added last year. These new entries reflect how the shift in online culture is affecting everyday speech.

Internet Culture Changes the English Language

The new entries include terms such as "Skibidi", a nonsense word that originated from the viral YouTube series, "Delulu", referring to delusion, and "Tradwife", which pertains to traditional gender roles often discussed on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Other additions include "Lewk", an unmistakable fashion look, "Inspo", short for inspiration, and "Maus -Yiggler", which implies that someone is pretending to work during work hours.

Environmental Awareness and New Terms

The increasing environmental problems have led to the inclusion of "Forever Chemicals", which refer to artificial substances that remain in the environment for years. This addition highlights the growing concern and awareness about environmental issues.

The Selection Process for New Dictionary Entries

Colin Mcintosh, Lexical Program Manager at The Cambridge Dictionary, noted that it is unusual to see words like "Skibidi" and "Delulu" make their entry into the dictionary. The team only adds words that they believe will stand the test of time. Mcintosh emphasized that internet culture is changing the English language, and the effect is fascinating to observe and document in the dictionary.
