Newsmax Settlement
The outrageous lies over the 2020 presidential elections cost Newsmax 67 million US dollars. In order to avert a high-stakes trial, the right-wing cable outlet has agreed to pay $27 million and another $40 million in the next two years.
Comparison Contract
The comparison contract was concluded last week and announced on Monday in a financial registration in Newsmax. "We are pleased to have settled this matter," said a spokesman for the company towards CNN and rejected further commenting.
False Claims
There was no indication that Newsmax will offer an apology or recognition of its false claims about Dominion, a hardware and software company entitled to vote, which was the goal of many pro-Trump conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election.
Lawsuit Background
The lawsuit was submitted against Newsmax in August 2021 after Donald Trump’s attempts to overthrow his election results around 2020. After Trump and his allies, including many Newsmax guests and on-air personalities, lost, they spread the unfounded lie that the election results were fraudulent.
Court Ruling
At the beginning of this year, a judge in Delaware ruled that Newsmax had accused defaming statements about Dominion. The judge said it was on a jury to decide whether the cuts were intended, and if so, how much Dominion deserves in damages. However, the expected procedure in April was postponed by the judge, although a professional affair had not to do with the case.
Settlement Comparison
Then the money spoke, just as it was, when Fox News with Dominion settled on the sidelines of a similar trial in 2023. FOX agreed to pay 787.5 million US dollars, a sum of gobsmacking, which at that time put on the quarterly profits of Fox Corp.
Newsmax and Dominion Agreement
There was no direct indication of how Newsmax and Dominion came to a total of 67 million US dollars on Monday. However, the television values from Newsmax are approximately a tenth of Fox’s ratings.
Ongoing Complaints
Almost five years after the pro-Trump campaign to lift the results of the 2020 elections, some complaints from victims of the smears continue to wrap through the dishes. Fox aggressively fights a defamation lawsuit by the Voting-Tech company Smartmatic. On the eve of an agreement of over 40 million US dollars, Newsmax agreed with SmartMatic last autumn.
