Introduction to Changing Tables for Adults
Changing tables are often associated with infants or small children, but there is another population that requires these accessible devices: teenagers and adults with disabilities. In most cases, nursing staff are forced to change them on the floors of cars or bathing rooms, sometimes even in public without privacy.
The Challenges Faced by Adults with Disabilities
Due to a genetic illness that affects his connective tissue, Joshua Taylor experienced a decline in mobility and began to suffer from incontinence. He soon realized that changing tables were not just a convenience, but a necessity for himself and tens of thousands of people in his community, as well as millions across the country. Taylor faced the challenge of finding a place to change when a changing table was not available, often having to use the back seat of his vehicle or lie on a dirty bathroom floor.
The Need for Accessible Changing Tables
Taylor’s experiences highlighted the need for accessible changing tables for adults. He had to rely on makeshift solutions, such as using the back seat of his vehicle or sitting on a dirty bathroom floor, which was not only uncomfortable but also unhygienic. He noted that people often stay at home instead of risking the embarrassment of being in public without access to a clean and private changing facility. Taylor emphasized that having accessible changing tables would enable more people to participate in life and engage with their communities.
Installing Changing Tables in Public Places
There are different models of adult changing tables, including one in Dodge Park in Commerce Township that features an elevator capable of supporting up to 1,000 pounds. Taylor is working with local and state officials to install changing tables in Michigan and is also the chairman of the national organization, Changing Places USA. He hopes to make adult changing tables available in as many places as possible, providing people with disabilities the dignity and independence they deserve.
Access to Adult Changing Tables
A list of adult changing table locations can be found on Changing Places USA’s interactive map, which provides a valuable resource for individuals with disabilities and their caregivers. By installing adult changing tables in public places, communities can become more inclusive and accessible, enabling people with disabilities to participate fully in life.
