Switzerland’s Official Entry for the 2026 Oscars

Introduction to Late Layer

The Swiss Cultural Office of Switzerland has announced "Late Layer" as the country’s official entry for the 2026 Oscars in the international feature film category. This news comes on the heels of Music Box Films acquiring the North American sales rights for the picture.

The Film’s Plot and Premiere

"Late Layer" had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and tells the story of Floria, a nurse played by Leonie Benesch, who navigates the challenges of working in a surgical community with dedication and warmth. Despite being understaffed, Floria provides exceptional patient care, making for a gripping race against time as the day unfolds.

Acquisitions and Praise

According to Brian Andreotti, head of acquisitions at Music Box Films, "Late Layer" is a universal thriller that can be relatable to anyone who has worked a demanding job. He praises Leonie Benesch’s performance, saying it is a "tour-de-force of stamina, dignity, and power." The Swiss Oscar committee has selected "Late Layer" for its universal appeal and outstanding central performance.

The Director’s Previous Work

The film’s director, Petra Volpe, has previously made "The Divine Order," which was Switzerland’s Oscar entry in 2018. Switzerland has won the Oscar twice in the international feature film category, for "Dangerous Moves" in 1984 and "Journey of Hope" in 1990.

Box Office Success and Production

"Late Layer" has achieved significant box office success, topping the charts in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland for four weeks after its release in February. The film has been sold to over 50 countries, with Music Box handling the US distribution. It was produced by Reto Schaerli and Lukas Hobi from Zodiac Pictures, in co-production with several other companies, and received support from various cultural and film organizations.

Conclusion

With its selection as Switzerland’s official entry for the 2026 Oscars, "Late Layer" is poised to gain international recognition for its thought-provoking and gripping portrayal of a nurse’s dedication to her patients. The film’s success is a testament to the power of storytelling and the impact it can have on audiences worldwide.
