Recall of Health Products
An American company that produces health products has recalled four over-the-counter skin cleaners and an anti-lotion due to the potential for "serious and life-threatening infections". The recall was issued by Dermarite Industries in New Jersey, who announced on Friday that it was voluntarily recalling the health products because they can cause microbial contamination known as Burkholderia Cepecia.
Reason for Recall
The contaminated products can lead to disadvantageous reactions, especially in the case of immunocompromised persons. According to the company, the contaminated products "can be used by immunosuppressed people or by people who take care of these people". The recall notice was also issued by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Symptoms of Infection
The symptoms for Burkholderia Cepecia complex can range from fever and tiredness to serious respiratory infections. In healthy people with minor skin lesions, the use of the product is more likely to lead to local infections, while in the case of immunocompromising people, the infection is more likely to lead to a bloodstream infection, which can cause life-threatening sepsis.
Products Affected
The products contained in the recall include Dermacleen, Dermasarra, Kleenfoam, and Perigiene – all of which serve slightly different health purposes. For example, Dermacleen is an antimicrobial hand cleaner, while Dermasarra offers relief from poison ivy, insect bites, and other skin irritations.
Company Response
Dermarite said that there were no reports of adverse events related to this recall. The company has contacted its distributors and customers by email and advised them to "check the available inventory immediately and to destroy all affected products in accordance with the process of each facility". Consumers who have used the products are advised to contact their doctor or health service provider if they have problems that may be connected to the use of the products.
Consumer Advice
Consumers who have used the products should be aware of the potential risks and take necessary precautions. If they experience any symptoms or problems that may be connected to the use of the products, they should seek medical attention immediately. The company has taken steps to notify its customers and distributors, and is working to prevent any further potential harm.
