Introduction to Mars Exploration
There could have been life on Mars. A piece of rock discovered by the NASA spaceship Curiosity Rover, which was allegedly formed a billion years ago, has sparked excitement among scientists. The rock, similar to coral typically found on the ocean floor, was found in the storm crater, a large impact pool on Mars.
The Discovery
The small, approximately 1-inch wide, light, wind-made rock was found in the storm crater. A colorless picture taken by a telescopic camera recorded the familiar object. Although this discovery is exciting, it is not the first of its kind. The same camera, also known as the Remote Micro Imager of Curiosity, has reportedly recorded similar-looking objects in the past, indicating that the planet had an aqueous past.
Aqueous Past of Mars
These objects were available years ago when liquid water was still on the red planet. This is due to the fact that water dissolved minerals in rock cracks and later dried, and the hardened minerals remained. This common process, which can be seen extensively on Earth, has created fantastic forms on Mars, including a flower-shaped rock.
Indications of Life on Mars
The coral-like rock indicates that Mars had an aqueous past. These discoveries give hope that there was life on Mars. NASA’s Curiosity was busy this summer, recording pictures of a geological structure with the nickname "spider grove" due to its insect-like combustion pattern.
Geological Structures on Mars
Similar to the coral rock, these "spider webs" also indicate that Mars once had hardened water. The collected images and data are already raising new questions about how the Martian interface changed billions of years ago. The red planet once had rivers, lakes, and possibly an ocean. Although scientists are not sure why, its water finally dried, and the planet turned into the cool desert it is today.
Changes on Mars
Remarkably, the boxwork patterns show that water was still underground in the middle of this drying and today creates changes. Aeons of sandblasting by Mars wind have worn the rock, but not the minerals, and revealed networks of resistant combs inside. These discoveries continue to provide valuable insights into the history and potential for life on Mars.
