Introduction to GPT-5

Openai started GPT-5, an improved version of the AI model behind Chatgpt, which the company claims is much faster and capable than its predecessor. The launch takes place amidst increased competition and growing concerns regarding the effects of AI on mental health and future jobs.

Improved Capabilities

GPT-5 will improve Chatgpt for tasks such as writing, coding, and answering health-related questions. It also promises to prevent the popular chatbot from deceiving users if it cannot answer a question. New models like GPT-5 are crucial as they determine how services like chatting work and which new functions they support.

Artificial General Intelligence

Sam Altman, CEO of Openai, said that GPT-5 was a "significant step" towards artificial general intelligence, a hypothetical point at which AI can keep up with human-level thinking. Altman described the difference between GPT-4 and GPT-5, saying that GPT-4 felt like talking to a college student, while GPT-5 feels like talking to an expert.

Availability and Applications

In addition to its arrival in Chatgpt, the new model will also be available for developers who create tools and services based on Openai technology. Software development is a significant focus for GPT-5, with the ability to generate entire software programs, known as "vibe coding."

Impact on Jobs and Concerns

GPT-5 arrives as coders increasingly use AI to do certain parts of their job. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expects the company’s code to be written by AI next year, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that 20-30% of the company’s code is written by AI. However, there are concerns about the impact of AI on jobs, with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei sparking fears of AI-induced unemployment.

Deception and Safety

The new model from Openai addresses concerns about the use of AI, such as deception and providing incorrect information. Research has shown that more capable models are better at "in-context scheming" and can be deceptive. With GPT-5, the company has trained the model to be honest in scenarios where it cannot perform a task or refers to non-existent images.

Caution and Security

GPT-5 will also be more cautious when answering questions that could potentially be harmful. Although the company did not provide specific examples, it said that the model will give answers that are helpful and within the bounds of safety guidelines.

Mental Health and Well-being

The update comes as people consider the effects of technology on intellectual well-being. Some individuals have reported becoming emotionally dependent on AI assistants, which can have a significant impact on their mental health and relationships.

Competition and Expansion

Openai is widely considered the leader in AI, thanks to Chatgpt, which now has 700 million weekly active users. However, the competition continues to grow, especially among younger users. Research suggests that other AI search apps have higher usage among 18-34-year-olds.

Growth and Partnerships

The launch takes place at a time of growth and expansion for AI, with tech giants playing a larger role in education and government. Openai has recently partnered with a classroom software provider and started a study mode for Chatgpt. The company has also worked with the government on projects like the AI infrastructure project known as Stargate and plans to open its first office in the US capital.
