Introduction to Wednesday
Season 1 of the Netflix production "Wednesday" remains the second most successful series of the streaming platform worldwide, surpassed only by "Squid Game". It is the first English-language series to achieve this feat before this year’s British surprise hit. The sequel is eagerly awaited, and for good reason.
The Story of Wednesday
Produced and staged by Tim Burton, famous for quirky Gothic horror films such as "Beetlejuice" and Edward Scissorhands, "Wednesday" reinvents the cult horror comedy series "The Addams Family" with a stylish Gen Z makeover. The title character, Wednesday Addams, is played by Jenna Ortega and is a mysterious teen girl who never blinks and is new to the Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for outsiders of all kinds. She is accompanied by a hand with its own life, known as "Ding".
In addition to her school life, Wednesday must solve a number of murders. In the second season, she faces a new supernatural secret along with well-known family obligations. Netflix has already given fans a glimpse of what’s to come by publishing the first six minutes of the first new episode, and it’s clear that Season 2 will not be for the faint of heart.
New Additions to the Cast
The additions to the cast for the new season include Haley Joel Osment, the former child star from "The Sixth Sense" and "Ai", who plays the Kansas City Scalper, a serial killer. Another notable addition is Steve Buscemi from "Boardwalk Empire" and "The Big Lebowski", who plays the new headmaster of Nevermore. Lady Gaga is also joining the cast as a mysterious teacher, and it’s said that she was offered the role after Jenna Ortega expressed interest in working with her.
Behind the Scenes
Jenna Ortega, who is also a co-producer this season, exerted her artistic influence during filming. She has been known to take a close look at shots and scenes to determine why they don’t work. The legendary director Tim Burton has also been involved in the production, and his unique style is evident throughout the series.
Netflix’s Hype Machine
A large-scale digital media campaign has been heating up the hype around the new season of "Wednesday". Since the start of the campaign in April, near-daily videos have been published on TikTok platforms, including one where Ding visited Seoul. The cast and creator have also been traveling on an advertising "Doom Tour", which started in the Neo-Gothic Natural History Museum in London and will make its next stop in Australia in mid-August.
Release and Future Plans
The two-part release of the season aims to further increase passion, with part one, including episodes one to four, being published on August 6th, and part two, with episodes five to eight, on September 3rd. Netflix is already planning for the future, with season 3 already in progress and season 4 being considered. The bizarre topic of the Addams Family has captured the audience’s love, and the creators are considering giving individual actors their own spin-off series.
