Introduction to The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping

The fans of The Hunger Games have been waiting to see if any well-known faces from the original franchise will return, especially Josh Hutcherson, who portrayed Peeta Mellark in all four films of the blockbuster YA adaptation. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is set to hit cinemas on November 20, 2026.

Josh Hutcherson’s Possible Return

Josh Hutcherson has expressed his enthusiasm about returning to the world of Panem. In an interview with Brit + Co, he stated, "That would be cool. No, I don’t know anything in this world at the moment. Gaming is incredible, and I have loved it for many years, and I will love it forever." Although Hutcherson was not confirmed to appear in Sunrise on the Reaping, the door is not closed, especially since Peeta and Katniss appear in the book.

The Latest Book by Suzanne Collins

The latest book by Suzanne Collins takes place 24 years before the 74th Hunger Games and focuses on a young Haymitch Abernathy during his fatal run through the arena. However, the novel is framed by scenes from an adult Katniss and Peeta listening to Haymitch tell his story, which means that a cameo appearance by Josh Hutcherson is not out of the question. In the past, Hutcherson has made his enthusiasm clear, saying, "I would like to play Peeta again. I think Peeta is an unbelievable person to bring to life."

Cast of Sunrise on the Reaping

Whether Josh Hutcherson receives the call to return or not, the film already boasts a stacked lineup. Sunrise on the Reaping stars Joseph Quinn as Haymitch, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, McKenna Grace as Mayfair Lippincott, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Maya Hawke as Wren, Billy Porter as Lucky Flickerman, Lili Taylor as Tigris Snow, and Ralph Fiennes as President Snow. The film is directed by Francis Lawrence, who returns after helming four earlier entries in the franchise.

Release Date

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is set to open in cinemas worldwide on November 20, 2026. With its talented cast and experienced director, the film is expected to be a hit among fans of the franchise. Although Josh Hutcherson’s return is not confirmed, his enthusiasm for the series and his character suggests that he may make an appearance in the film.
