Introduction to Self.Space

A new photography concept is to be started in Dubai to completely put both the camera and creative control into the hands of the user. Self.Space, which is described by its founders as the first AI-operated studio of the UAE for self-photography, will open its flagship location in Al Quoz this September.

The Concept and Benefits

The startup promises to clean up privacy and comfort problems by offering a sealed, soundproof space in which users can take portraits in studio quality without a photographer being present. Inside, an intelligent mirror and a camera for cinemas, which are powered by Edge Ai, leads individuals through a self-directed session with automatic image improvement and secure delivery via private link.

Overcoming Discomfort in Traditional Photo Shoots

"There are often discomfort in traditional photo shoots; the backdrop, the photographer, the pressure, a certain way to look," said the founder and CEO from Self.Space. "We wanted to remove that. Our goal is to create a room where people can be themselves and have thought back." The concept came from a common observation – that people often reject photographs because of their appearance, but due to complaints or discomfort during the session.

Technology and Privacy

According to the founders, the system is based on embedded cameras and AI to recognize facial features and skin tones and use subtle real-time improvements such as color corrections and skin smoothing without changing the natural features. The images are saved in encrypted, user-specific galleries that are only accessible via one-time passcodes that are sent to the user’s phone. No personal data is stored beyond the access mechanism of the gallery.

Pilot and User Response

The concept was first piloted at the Arab Media Summit in 2024, where the founders reported that hundreds of women tried the service. "Many said it was the first time that they really enjoyed a photo shoot," said the CEO. Since then, the studio has reported over 4,000 users in soft-starts. While the service may attract influencers and specialists who are looking for headshots, the startup claims that its core focus helps everyday users feel better in front of the camera.
