Introduction to Swingathon
If you believe that the festival season is only about flower crowns and muddy fields, think again. Deep in England’s landscape of Lincolnshire, there is a meeting in the sleepy city of Allington, which only those who dare to visit attend. Dubbed by The Sun’s sex writer as "Glastonbury with orgies and Love Island-Style beauties", Swingathon, now in its fifth year, is not your typical festival.
What is Swingathon?
Synchronized with live music and entertainment, but for lifestyle people, Swingathon’s organizer, Matt Cole, insists that there are still elements of a standard festival. For those who are not familiar with the "lifestyle", swinging people from all walks of life – LGBTQIA+, Queer, couples, and everyone who is willing to explore non-monogamy – attend this event.
The Festival Experience
The three-day event last weekend was the biggest turnout so far, with almost 1,000 revelers descending upon the small town, which was more than the entire local population. Despite its entertaining ethos, the event last year drew serious complaints from nearby residents, who claimed they heard loud, long “moaning” from the campsites. Cole insists that this was only half true, saying that while there was moaning, the claims were exaggerated.
Demographics and Attendance
The event mainly consists of couples, with a ticket for two people costing around $470. This year, around 100 single men and 50-60 single women attended. The average age is 37, which is much younger than expected. The youngest attendee was 21, and the oldest was 69.
Behind the Scenes
So, what actually happens behind the scenes? During the day, the festival organizes various events, including UV parties, social nights, workshops, live talks, and demonstrations. These demonstrations are not your standard fare, with some featuring wax play, rope play, pole dancing, burlesque classes, and massage classes. There are also whirlpools, sex games, foam parties, and mobile dungeons. One of the more interesting events is Butt Plug Bingo, a cheeky twist on traditional bingo where the winner receives an adult toy.
A Controlled Environment
With regard to the actual swinging, there are sanctioned tents where people can go if they are interested in exploring adult fun. Everything is controlled, with group tents, voyeur tents, and all sorts of tents for everyone. However, Cole says that many people don’t even attend for the swinging aspect. Many simply go for the liberating aspect of body positivity, to be with like-minded people, and to gain confidence.
A Unique Experience
It’s not what people think, says Cole. Attendees don’t just show up and start swinging. Many friendships are formed, and people leave with much more confidence than when they arrived. Swingathon is a unique experience that offers something different from your typical festival. While it may not be for everyone, it’s an event that is gaining popularity and providing a safe space for people to express themselves and explore their desires.
