AI Job Market Growth
AI gets a lot of attention for eliminating human jobs, but more and more it can do the opposite. The number of job advertisements that mention artificial intelligence has risen by over 100% in the last year, according to a report by the Brookings Institution. In the past 15 years, AI-related job advertisements have increased with an average annual rate of almost 29%.
The demand for AI expertise is growing because more companies integrate AI into their work processes. According to Brookings, the proportion of companies that use AI in the processing industry has more than doubled, from 4% in early 2023 to around 9% in mid-2025.
While AI employment growth has accelerated in recent years, it only makes up a small part of the labor market. The investment bank Goldman Sachs estimates that the highest adoption pace will be reached in the early 2030s. “AI is definitely visible in the labor market data, but it doesn’t look like it is driving the overall dynamics of the labor market,” said a senior global economist at Goldman Sachs.
Type of AI Jobs
The aspiring AI work market includes a mixture of skills that range from advanced AI-specific roles such as AI engineers to more general AI positions such as software developers. In 2025, more than 80,000 job offers mentioned generative AI skills, compared to 3,780 in 2010.
The accelerating adoption of AI by companies stimulates the demand for consultants who can help companies integrate AI. Job offers related to so-called responsible AI, which focus on the ethical use of AI tools in business and society, are also increasing. “In other words, the definition of what it means to be an AI job changes every day when companies find new and creative ways to involve technology,” said an economist.
Benefits of AI Jobs
AI positions can prove to be particularly appealing in the US labor market, as they are usually connected to higher salaries. Job advertisements that mention AI skills pay an average of $18,000 or 28% more per year than similar roles that do not require AI skills.
Location of AI Jobs
It is not surprising that AI employment growth is usually concentrated in technical hubs such as Silicon Valley, which accounts for 13% of all AI-related job advertisements, and Seattle, which accounts for 7%. However, AI jobs can also be found in other parts of the country, including the Sunbelt and along the east coast between Boston and Washington, DC.
AI skills are increasingly necessary in non-tech areas such as marketing, personnel resources, and finances. According to data, over half of the job offers that requested AI skills in 2024 were outside of tech and computer science. While adoption is uneven in geographical areas, it is expected to increase faster in the coming years as employers discover the advantages and restrictions of AI.
