Introduction to Superhuman’s Box Office Performance
Although Superhuman continues to dominate the domestic box office after two weeks, its success has not fully translated to the international audience. The film has been in cinemas since July 8 and has garnered a significant amount of attention.
International Box Office Performance
The co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, recently commented on the international transport of $173 million of the film. Gunn explained to Rolling Stone, "We definitely work better in Germany than internationally, but internationally also increases and has really good weekdays in the same way as we do. The word of mouth is so obvious both here and everywhere very positive." He also noted that certain countries, such as Brazil and Great Britain, have seen a particularly positive response to the film.
Challenges in International Markets
Gunn acknowledged that Superhuman is not as well-known in some international markets, which can affect its box office performance. He stated, "Superman is not a well-known commodity in some places. He is not a big well-known superhero in some places like Batman. That affects things." Additionally, Gunn mentioned that anti-American sentiment in some parts of the world may also be a factor.
Global Box Office Total
Despite these challenges, the global total for Superhuman continues to increase, exceeding $426 million. The film’s second weekend saw a significant gain, with $58.5 million in the US, surpassing Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) at $51.3 million.
The Story Behind Superhuman
Gunn described Superhuman as "the story of America," explaining that it is about "an immigrant who came from other places and populated the country, but for me, it is mainly a story that says that the basic human quality is a value and something we have lost." This theme is central to the film and is part of what sets it apart from other superhero movies.
The Future of the DCU Franchise
After taking over DC Studios with Peter Safran in 2022, Superhuman marks the first entry in Gunn’s new DCU franchise, which begins with the phase of the ‘gods and monsters.’ This new franchise is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the world of superheroes, and Superhuman is just the beginning.
