Introduction to Powerball Winners
A new study has revealed the US states with the highest chances of winning the Powerball. Unfortunately, none of the Tri-State areas made it to the top 5. The Powerball lottery game, available in 45 US states, offers various ways to win prizes, ranging from matching the Powerball number to winning the jackpot.
How the Study Was Conducted
The study, carried out by CSDB.GG, analyzed Powerball data from 1992 to 2025 to determine where someone has to live to have the highest probability of winning. The researchers looked at the number of wins per 100,000 inhabitants for the game 5, the game 5+ Power Play, or the Powerball Jackpot.
Top 5 States with the Highest Chances of Winning
The top 5 states with the highest chances of winning the Powerball are:
- Rhode Island, with an estimated 38.39 Powerball victories per 100,000 inhabitants
- West Virginia, with 27.29 victories per 100,000 inhabitants
- Delaware, with over 285 overall wins
- New Hampshire, with 21.15 victories per 100,000 inhabitants and 285 Powerball victories in history
- Indiana, with 18.41 wins per 100,000 native inhabitants
States with Lower Chances of Winning
On the other hand, there are states where the chances of a resident winning are extremely low. These include:
- California, with only 0.91 wins per 100,000 inhabitants
- Texas, with 0.88 wins per 100,000 people
- Wyoming, with 0.85 victories per 100,000 inhabitants
- Washington, with 0.78 victories per 100,000 inhabitants
- Mississippi, with the lowest chances of winning, at approximately 0.07 wins per 100,000 locals
Regional Variations in Powerball Wins
The regional Powerball victories are striking, with smaller states in the northeast producing larger numbers of wins relative to the number of players. This does not mean that the lottery is manipulated, but rather that ticket purchase habits vary significantly across regions, and win rates are likely influenced by the year each state joined Powerball.
