Breaking News in the Film Industry
Bryan Cranston, the renowned star of "Breaking Bad" and "Trumbo," has taken a firm stance regarding the ongoing financial challenges plaguing the independent film "Loner." In an exclusive message to Deadline, Cranston expressed his commitment to not returning to finish the film or promote its release until all crew members and cast who are owed money are fully repaid.
The Financial Struggles of "Loner"
The film, which had its production halted months ago, is facing a financing shortfall of approximately $2 million. Crew members, vendors, and some staff are still awaiting payment for at least a week’s worth of work, with some scenes still left to be shot. According to financier and producer Jordan Wagner, the project suffered a "breakdown of the financing structure," and efforts are being made to bridge the financial gaps.
Cranston’s Message and the Film’s Future
In his message, Cranston, who has already been paid for his previous work on the film, expressed his desperation and disappointment upon learning that several of his co-stars were still owed money. He spoke to some of his co-stars, who shared their concerns and frustrations. Cranston’s statement highlights the importance of completing the film, citing the crucial scenes that are still left to be shot and the need to repay the crew members.
The Film’s Plot and Cast
"Loner" is a conspiracy thriller directed by Mark Pellington, starring Lily Gladstone as a troubled veteran struggling with addiction, who is hired by a contractor (played by Cranston) to assassinate a high-ranking politician. The film boasts a talented cast, including O’Shea Jackson Jr., Jennifer Ehle, Chet Hanks, and Spencer Garrett. The producing team includes Oscar nominee Christine Vachon and veteran producer Ted Hope, among others.
Cranston’s Full Statement
"The report in Deadline (as far as I know) is quite accurate (thanks for that, Andreas). It’s very unfortunate that this fascinating little story has been temporarily derailed due to a few incidents that have temporarily halted the production of the film. For some reason, money was not disbursed in a timely manner. At the moment, there are strong efforts to raise the necessary capital for the film, and I think this will happen for two main reasons: one, because the missing few scenes (about two shooting days) are of crucial importance for the story. And two, that I think I also speak for Lily, until the crew member returns for the film. For my part in this film, I was paid for my part before the last temporary work interruption – I was surprised when I found out that we had to stop again, and that most of the crew did not get their last two weeks of payment. Here it is now… I am striving for this, that this caused so much grief and distrust, and so I’m so sorry that this crew (which was fantastic) was not treated with the respect you deserve, but I really think the producers will get through these difficult times by doing all, and we will finish the film."
