A Shift in Hollywood for Women
Scarlett Johansson has seen a significant change in the film industry, particularly for women, from her early days as a child actress to her current career. The two-time Oscar nominee has noticed that recent years have brought about new opportunities for young women in the industry, moving away from roles that centered around the male gaze.
Evolving Role Models
Johansson explained that the messaging in the industry has changed, with more women in powerful positions and a wider range of role models. She noted that the possibilities for women in film have expanded, allowing them to play complex characters that are not limited to being one-dimensional or defined solely by their desirability or relationship to men.
A Change in the Types of Roles Offered
In an interview with The Times, Johansson shared that when she was younger, many of the roles offered to her were based on her desirability or the male perspective. However, she has seen a shift in recent years, with fewer roles being defined by these criteria. Instead, women are being offered more complex and dynamic characters that showcase their talents and abilities.
A Career Spanning Decades
Johansson made her film debut at the age of 9 in the movie North (1994) and went on to play leading roles in films like The Horse Whisperer (1998), Ghost World (2001), and Lost in Translation (2003). Her career has spanned decades, including her run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which culminated in her solo film Black Widow (2021).
Current and Upcoming Projects
Johansson can currently be seen in Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, which is playing in theaters, and Jurassic World Dominion, which premieres on July 2. She also made her feature directorial debut with the film Singularity, which had its world premiere at Cannes last month. With these new projects, Johansson continues to showcase her talent and versatility as an actress and director.
