Introduction to Crazy Rich Asians Series
The adaptation of the Crazy Rich Asians series is approaching production, with Henry Golding set to return to the life of the upper crust as Nick Young. After playing the romantic lead in Jon M. Chu’s 2018 adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s novels, Golding recently shared a "promising" update about the upcoming HBO Max series.
Update on the Series Production
Golding shared that "something is being done" and that they are "trying to get it done" for a release as early as the first quarter of next year. He revealed this information during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, where he told host Andy Cohen that there are scripts being written, but they have not yet been finalized.
Behind-the-Scenes of the Series
Warner Bros.’ TV series has already set up a development room, with executive producer and showrunner Adele Lim, who co-wrote the film with Peter Chiarelli, at the helm. Jon M. Chu and Kevin Kwan are also serving as executive producers on the show. In February, the original cast was in unofficial discussions about returning for the series, which will not replace the long-awaited sequel to the 2018 film, but will be based on the same book series.
About the Original Film
The original film, Crazy Rich Asians, was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Film – Musical or Comedy and grossed over $239 million worldwide, breaking several box office records. The film stars Constance Wu as Rachel Chu, a professor at NYU, who accompanies her longtime boyfriend Nick (Golding) to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore, where she learns that he comes from an extremely wealthy family and is considered the most eligible bachelor in the country.
What to Expect from the Series
While details about the series are still scarce, fans of the film can expect more of the same luxurious and dramatic storylines, with Golding reprising his role as Nick Young. With the success of the film and the popularity of the book series, the HBO Max series is sure to be a hit with audiences. As Golding said, the scripts are "promising," and fans can expect a release as early as next year.
