Introduction to Magic: The Gathering Film
Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald have completed a deal to write the live-action Magic: The Gathering film for Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment, according to sources. The representatives for Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment declined to comment. Matt Johnson was previously attached to lead the project, but the status of the deal is unclear.
What is Magic: The Gathering?
Magic: The Gathering is recognized as the first trading card game in the world, with over 50 million fans worldwide since 1993. In the game, players take on the role of planeswalkers, powerful magicians who summon creatures, cast spells, and use artifacts to defeat their opponents. The game has expanded into a global phenomenon with competitive tournaments, professional game circuits, and a flourishing secondary market for rare and powerful cards.
Expansion of the Magic: The Gathering Universe
The ongoing action, which plays in a multiverse of fantasy worlds, has been expanded by card sets, novels, and even crossover collaborations with franchise companies, including Dungeons & Dragons and The Lord of the Rings. Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment announced their intention to start a Magic film and TV universe in February, with a feature project.
Background of the Writers
Gardner and Fitzgerald have previously worked with Hasbro as writers for a Power Rangers film, which had Jonathan Destin on board to direct but never came to fruition. They also worked on an Aquaman spinoff called The Trench for Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Entertainment, James Wan, and Peter Safran, as well as the psychological thriller The Patient for Maximum Effort, Vertigo Entertainment, and 20th Century Studios.
Recent Projects of the Writers
Gardner and Fitzgerald recently wrote the TV series Dancer, based on the cult science fiction film, which they sold to Amazon as a studio with the fifth season. This was developed with Leigh Whannell, who is attached to produce with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Jon Silk. Gardner and Fitzgerald are repped by WME, Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment, Northstar, and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum.
