Production Details
"Dance for Beginners" is a Hungarian-Belgian-Spanish co-production led by Hungarian producer István Major for his company, Filmquad. Major has previously worked on notable projects such as "Nuremberg", "The Childhood of a Leader", and "Slingshot", which starred Russell Crowe and Rami Malek.
The Storyline
The film is inspired by a true story from the mid-1970s in Cold War Europe. It follows the life of W. György, a Hungarian hotel receptionist, whose life takes an unexpected turn as he becomes entangled in a network of love, espionage, and self-discovery.
Filmmaking and Support
The French and Hungarian language film is currently being shot by director Viktor Oszkar Nagy and written by Norbert Csala. The project is supported by Creative Europe Media and the National Film Institute in Hungary. Gül Togay serves as the creative producer, with co-producers Javier Toledo and Benoît Roland, and executive producer Guillaume Benski.
Director’s Vision
Director Nagy shared his core idea for the film, stating, "For me, one of the core ideas of the film is that happiness does not depend on external circumstances nor life simply by moving to another country or in a social environment. Wherever we are, we always bring ourselves. Change does not come from the outside; it comes from the inside." This philosophy underlines the themes of personal growth and transformation that are woven throughout the narrative of "Dance for Beginners".
