Introduction to Myeloma

A former footballer was left in "complete shock" after being diagnosed with blood cancer, having initially believed the pain was due to a pulled muscle. Myeloma was diagnosed in the patient after months of rib and back pain. The 68-year-old, a father of three from Lancashire, visited his GP after experiencing a "scorching pain" he believed he had suffered while playing golf in 2021.

The Journey to Diagnosis

The patient had been experiencing twinges in his ribs for a year and a half before his diagnosis. When the pain worsened in mid-2020, he consulted his family doctor, who told him he had probably pulled a muscle and the twinges would sort themselves out. However, the pain continued for months, becoming quite weak and having a real impact on his life. After blood tests, myeloma was diagnosed in August 2021.

Reaction to Diagnosis

The patient was in complete shock upon receiving the diagnosis, having lost his father and two brothers to cancer in the past. He thought it was the end, but the team at Blackpool Victoria Hospital was "incredible." The patient underwent radiation therapy to treat the damage to his bones, followed by chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. He has been in remission since November 2022.

The Importance of Support

The support of family and friends was invaluable during this ordeal. The patient emphasized that it takes a small army to get someone through this, and having people in their corner who care for and lift them up when they are down is crucial. The patient’s family and closest friends provided this support, and he is now determined to make the most of his time with them.

Living with Myeloma

Almost five years after his diagnosis, the patient is now focused on living with myeloma for as long as possible. He has a preservation treatment to keep his cancer in check and is looking forward to seeing his grandson grow up and his children fulfill their dreams. The patient’s mindset is positive, and he is grateful for the support of his loved ones.

Understanding Myeloma

Myeloma is an incurable blood cancer that occurs in the bone marrow. Although it is the third most common type of blood cancer, it is often not well understood. While myeloma is incurable, it can be treated in most cases, and treatment can lead to remission times. However, the cancer will inevitably return.

Key Facts About Myeloma

  • Myeloma is an incurable blood cancer that occurs in the bone marrow
  • It is the third most common type of blood cancer
  • While it is incurable, myeloma can be treated in most cases
  • Treatment can lead to remission times, but the cancer will inevitably come back

Importance of Seeking Medical Attention

The patient emphasizes the importance of seeking medical attention if someone is unsure about their symptoms. Nobody knows their body better than their own, and it is crucial to visit the doctor if they are experiencing any unusual pain or discomfort. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a significant difference in managing myeloma and improving quality of life.
