Overcoming Depression
Linda Magull, the midfielder of Inter Milan, has spoken publicly for the first time about her struggles with severe depression. In a recent podcast, she shared that she feels much better now and is happy, a year after reaching a low point in her depression.
The Lowest Point
Magull’s depression was triggered by a combination of sporting and personal reasons. She had reached the climax of her international football career, winning silver with Germany at the 2022 Euros in England, but was excluded from the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. At the same time, she was experiencing changes in personal relationships, which tightened the situation. She said, "I was totally confused and didn’t know what to do with myself."
Struggles with Depression
In January 2024, Magull moved to Inter Milan, but the change of scenery only made things worse. She said, "I fled from Munich, but after a few weeks I missed it terribly. I thought I had lost everything." She started to experience panic attacks and sweats, and at one point, she thought, "What’s going on with me?" Her thoughts were so out of control that she saw no sense in life.
Seeking Help
In the summer of 2024, Magull made the difficult decision to seek help at a private clinic. She spent six weeks in the clinic, where she rediscovered her passion for football and life in general. She said, "It was not me in the months before. Depression simply took over my personality. They need treatment, they need therapy."
A New Chapter
In March 2025, Magull announced her retirement from the national team after 77 international games and 22 goals. She is now looking forward to another season at Inter, whose women have qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history. Magull remains proud of the difficult decision she made to seek help, saying, "This is the thing I am most proud of, no matter what or how many titles I won. I am proud that I went to this private clinic, but especially how I went."
A Message of Hope
Magull’s story is a message of hope for those struggling with depression. She encourages others to seek help and not be afraid to speak out. If you are suffering from severe emotional stress or suicidal thoughts, please do not hesitate to seek professional help.
