Freedom of Expression in America

Almost every flashpoint in American politics currently includes the right to freedom of expression and expression. Part of these tensions can be attributed to President Donald Trump, who sworn in his opening speech to "bring freedom of speech back to America", but again and again shows that he has some forms of speech that can bear great costs.

Trump’s Campaign Against Freedom of Speech

From arrests of Palestinian activists to clashes against universities in Washington, DC, Trump’s actions have fueled the "No Kings" protests across the country. "Trump’s retaliation campaign against freedom of speech has occurred a new and even more dangerous phase," said Nora Benavidez, a lawyer for civil rights and freedom of expression. International human rights groups have also noticed it, with Amnesty International condemning Trump’s recent claim that all protests during the army parade would be met with "very great violence".

Protests and Freedom of Speech

On Saturday, a big show of freedom of speaking is expected between the military parade in DC and the anti-trump demonstrations expected in all 50 states. Ezra Levin, the co-founder of Unnicisible, a progressive non-profit company, said that "we humans want to see their first change rights, because if these rights are threatened, they do not have these rights." The editorial board of the Everett Herald in the state of Washington noted that "The first change has received training in the past few days. Even in the middle of abuses of this right, this is the good."

Restrictions on Freedom of Speech

Trump officials and allies have repeatedly cited security risks while restricting the right to speak, as in the case of Mahmoud Khalil, the graduate of Columbia University at the center of a top-class deportation struggle for his propalestinian views. Safety concerns were also taken into account when Senator Alex Padilla was violently removed from a press conference, with Rep. Nancy Pelosi condemning the handcuffs on Padilla by describing it as "attack on freedom of speech in our country".

Press Freedom

Press groups have also warned of potential violations of the initial adaptation during the anti-Ice protests in LA and other cities. The Reporters sent the Press and 60 media, including CNN, a letter to federal, state, and local officials asking them to ensure that the authorities maintain the rights of journalists to report on law enforcement activities without reprisals.

Trump’s View on Freedom of Speech

Nowadays, free speech versus is not the relevant dividing line. Rather, it is preferred compared to unfavorable language – and Trump is very explicit about which one. During his failure with Elon Musk, Trump said that Musk would be exposed to "very serious consequences" if he financed the Republican candidate of democratic challengers, a comment that many interpreted as a threat. Trump praised "to be woken up in our schools, our military and only in our society" and claimed: "They no longer see. It was almost illegal."

Lawsuits Against Media Outlets

The steps of the Trump government against media such as The Associated Press, Voice of America, NPR, and PBS have produced first-time lawsuits in the past few weeks. Some of the targeted outlets cited Trump’s claims about bias and "fake news" to argue that President Viewpoint-Discrimination committed. Critics say various other actions – such as deleting government websites and banning books from shelves – were also against the spirit, even if he is not the first change against the letter.

Conclusion

California governor Gavin Newsom raised the topic in his speech to the state on Tuesday evening, saying that Trump "delegitimizes news organizations and took the first change". He concluded by telling the residents: "If you exercise your first change rights, please, please make it peaceful." The freedom of expression in America is under threat, and it is up to the citizens to protect it.
