Introduction to a New Kind of Animation
In the realm of adult animation, a new player is about to emerge on Netflix, premiering at the Animation Festival in France. This show, akin to "Big Mouth," tells the story of a dog named Bull who is dealing with the impending loss of his testicles. The premise is reminiscent of Seth Rogen’s 2016 film "Sausage Party" and even further back to Ralph Bakshi’s 1972 "Fritz the Cat," which was famously advertised with the line, "We are not rated with ‘X’ for nothing, baby!"
A Breakthrough in Animation
This animated film proudly declares that cartoons are not just for kids. Compared to "Fixed," Disney could seem tame. The production, credited to Sony Pictures Animation, is now set to debut on Netflix, which might give children easier access to this film than intended. Parents, beware: you might want to double-check those parental controls.
Animation Style and Direction
The animation style, deliberately simple and reminiscent of Saturday morning 2D cartoons, is the work of director Genndy Tartakovsky ("Samurai Jack") and co-writer Jon Vitti ("SNL," "The Simpsons"). They could have easily proposed a film like "Lady and the Tramp" but instead chose a more adult-oriented storyline. The character design, at its core, isn’t so different, but the content is decidedly more mature.
Plot Unveiling
From the start, it’s clear that this film earns its rating. We’re introduced to Bull’s world, where sexual ecstasy is hinted at from another room in the house. Our four-legged protagonist seems to embody the spirit of Harvey Weinstein, with an obsession over his visible "nuts." However, there’s heartache here too, as Bull gets beat up by towering neighbors, an Afghan Hound, and a show dog named Honey (voiced by Kathryn Hahn). The story unfolds with Bull, spoiled by his loving owners since his puppy days, realizing his "crown jewels" are the subject of affection among other dogs at the dog park, Wiggly Field.
The Problem and the Match
Bull’s problem is unveiled: he’s about to lose his "Old Spice and Napoleon" (his testicles). At the dog park, he meets his match in Honey, a narcissistic show dog, and Sterling (Beck Bennett), a dog bred to mate with her. As Bull navigates his friendships with Rocco, Fetch, and a happy Chihuahua, he realizes he must plan his escape or say goodbye to his pride and joy.
Adventures in the City
This leads to a wild adventure in the city, including a funny interlude with street cats and a bad strip club/bordello, where they meet a seducer Doberman named Frankie. The boys get into activities that might not sound funny in print but are part of the film’s humor. Director Tartakovsky clearly works without restrictions here.
Conclusion
To avoid being just a long premise, the film delivers a satisfying end. The last act redeems the entire movie, making "Fixed" fun, albeit slightly offensive. With its unique blend of humor and heart, this adult animation is set to make a mark.
