The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on New College Graduates

The job market for new college graduates is becoming increasingly challenging, especially with the rising influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the American workplace. According to Aneesh Raman, Chief Economic Opportunity Officer at LinkedIn, "We are entering a completely new economy, so the scientific economy in which we have been in the past 50 years is on the way out, and a new economy is on the way in." The effects of AI are already visible in various industries and jobs, leading to a shift in the job market.

The Changing Job Market

For the first time, unemployment among new graduates has exceeded the national average, partly due to the growing influence of AI. Matthew Martin, Senior US Economist at Oxford Economics, notes, "There are signs that entry-level positions are being replaced by artificial intelligence at higher rates than the roles above them." As AI continues to transform the workplace, it is essential for new graduates to adapt and develop skills that complement AI.

Developing AI-Related Skills

Experts recommend that young job seekers start by familiarizing themselves with AI tools, such as Anthropics Claude or OpenAI. Learning how to use these tools effectively is crucial, as it will become an essential skill in the job market. Emily Rose McRae, analyst at Gartner, suggests that learning how to use AI apps can help develop transferable skills, such as summarizing documents and validating results. However, users should be cautious when using AI to fill out application forms, as recruiters can often recognize AI-generated language.

Improving Soft Skills

While AI excels in certain tasks, it lacks the soft skills that are essential for many jobs. Experts emphasize the importance of developing skills such as problem-solving, communication, and critical thinking. Aneesh Raman notes, "You can’t outsource your thinking to AI. You still have to think critically and strategically." To improve soft skills, applicants should focus on developing their strengths and weaknesses, such as working on public speaking or leadership skills.

Choosing the Right Employer

In addition to developing skills, experts advise new graduates to be thoughtful about the kind of company they work for, considering how AI may impact the business in the coming years. It is essential to search for employers who integrate AI responsibly and invest in their workforce. Companies that adapt to technological change often offer the best learning and growth opportunities. When evaluating a potential employer, young professionals should ask about the company’s investments in employee development, career paths, and growth opportunities.

Evaluating Potential Employers

When researching companies, recent graduates should look for places that offer apprenticeship training or rotation programs, which can provide opportunities to quickly improve their knowledge base. By asking questions such as "How do you invest in your employees?" and "What career paths look like for this role?", job seekers can gain a better understanding of the company’s approach to AI and employee development. By choosing the right employer and developing the necessary skills, new college graduates can navigate the changing job market and thrive in an AI-driven economy.
