A Blast from the Past: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Many early 2000s projects are now 20 years old, including the iconic film from 2005, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, based on the book by Ann Brashares. The movie’s director, Ken Kwapis, recently shared some fascinating insights about the audition process, particularly Blake Lively’s audition.
Lively’s Audition: A Standout Performance
Kwapis revealed that Lively had no prior acting experience when she auditioned for the role of Bridget Vreeland. Despite being only 16 at the time, Lively demonstrated an intuitive connection to the character. Kwapis recalled:
"Blake came in without anything in her resume. She had never had an acting job and she was 16 when she auditioned for the role, but in the room, it was so clear that she had this intuitive connection to this character. She was just perfect for that. She also had a tough job, playing a character who deals with some rather weighty problems, and especially tries to process the death of a parent by suicide. She had a few tough things to pull off, and she did so nicely."
The Sisterhood’s Chemistry: A Delicate Balance
Kwapis disclosed that the lead actresses, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrara, Amber Tamblyn, and Blake Lively, had not met before filming. Since the characters spend most of the movie on separate journeys, the director had to strike a balance to find actors with the right chemistry. This chemistry was crucial in making the scenes where the characters interact convincing, as if they had been lifelong friends. Kwapis expressed his confidence in his casting choices, saying:
"The challenge was to encourage the four actors to create a feeling that they are lifelong friends; that they have been best friends since birth. There was no question in my head when I met America, Alexis, Amber, and Blake that the four actors were right for these roles."
The Movie’s Legacy
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is still widely popular today and is available for rent on Prime Video. The movie’s themes of friendship, self-discovery, and overcoming personal struggles continue to resonate with audiences. As a testament to the film’s enduring appeal, fans can still appreciate the talented cast and their portrayals of the beloved characters.
