Introduction to Netflix’s New Ad Plan

Netflix has unveiled plans to introduce even more ads for its streaming platform in a move that has annoyed users. The television and film giant will start using generative AI to insert ads into the content that users are watching.

How the New Ad System Works

A product could appear in the background of hit shows such as Stranger Things. The ads will be displayed if users pause what they are watching, rather than a freeze frame of the show or film. This new feature has been tested since last year, but it will now be available in all countries where ad subscription plans are available from 2026.

User Reaction to the New Ad Plan

Frustrated users have not welcomed the development, with some threatening to cancel their subscriptions. Many have expressed their discontent on social media, with one user stating, "Nobody likes AI" and another saying, "It’s probably time to cancel the subscription." Some users have even considered switching to buying DVDs instead of streaming.

Current Netflix Subscription Plans

Netflix currently has three types of subscription plans. The basic plan with ads is the cheapest option, starting at £5.99 in the UK and $7.99 in the US. The standard plan, which is ad-free, costs £12.99 in the UK and $17.99 in the US. The premium plan, which offers additional features such as 4K streaming and Netflix Spatial Audio, costs £18.99 in the UK and $24.99 in the US.

Features of Each Subscription Plan

Here are the features of each subscription plan:

  • Netflix Standard with Ads:
    • Advertising supply, all available except for some films and television programs, unlimited mobile phone games
    • Watch on two supported devices at the same time
    • Watch in 1080p (Full HD)
    • Download on 2 supported devices at the same time
  • Netflix Standard:
    • Unlimited ad-free films, television programs, and cell phone games
    • Watch on two supported devices at the same time
    • Watch in 1080p (Full HD)
    • Download on 2 supported devices at the same time
    • Add an option to add 1 additional member that does not live with you
  • Netflix Premium:
    • Unlimited ad-free films, television programs, and cell phone games
    • Watch on 4 supported devices at the same time
    • Watch in 4K (Ultra HD) + HDR
    • Download on 6 supported devices at the same time
    • Option to add 2 additional members who do not live with them
    • Netflix Spatial Audio

Conclusion

The introduction of generative AI ads and pause ads is a significant change to the Netflix platform. While the company is trying to offer cheaper subscription options, users are not happy with the increased number of ads. Only time will tell how this move will affect Netflix’s user base and revenue.
